Sausage Gravy

Your next Sunday treat is biscuits with this homemade sausage gravy!

Wow, these instantly put a smile on my husband and I’s faces when we are this. Seriously so delicious and your entire family will love it! My Dad actually showed me how to make this as a kid, and I am so grateful he did because it is a winner! I like to keep it traditional and stick to what he showed me, but you can add other items in the gravy, like sauteed onion and garlic. You could also try a different type of sausage, I have done maple before and that was yummy.

The key to a good gravy is the roux. It is also to make sure you cook out all the flour and whisk it enough to do so. I also build the gravy, so if it becomes too thick I will add more milk.

Recipe Below:

Servings: 2

Time cook: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup of cooked sausage, chopped

  • About 1-1/2 cups of milk (I use lactose-free)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: In one saute pan, put on medium heat and add the sausage to cook. In another saute pan add the butter and the flour. Whisk for a few minutes on medium-high heat. Once you have cooked for a few minutes slowly add some milk. Only add about a half of cup at a time. Whisk and then let bring to a boil. Slowly add milk and repeat. Be sure to keep an eye on it and whisk you don’t want it to start burning on the sides. Once the gravy is starting to thicken add salt and pepper to taste. Then once the gravy is done add the cooked sausage. Serve over biscuits and enjoy!
